Blasphemy is fun.

Maybe the Muslims have it right thinking it is such a high act of blasphemy to show the image of Muhammad. Maybe the Jews are on to something forbidding themselves from speaking His name. Or that whole ‘not worshiping false idols’ thing (it wasn’t an act of jealousy, the intent was really to prevent ‘them’ from putting a name and/or face to Him). I think I’ll stick to my general conviction that they’re all taking the first step in a good direction, and then falling victim to their own mortal shortcomings. This divine author of so much death and destruction has been philosophised to be “that than which nothing greater can be concieved” for a good reason. IF there is something greater at work here, tugging me around (and I sincerely believe that there must be), he/she/it (whatever) probably doesn’t need our help.
Why do I say this?
From the (modern) Old Testament perspective, what did Ol’ You Know Who ever ask of anyone? He asked Abraham to kill his only son, you say… how violent and horrible. Not so much…from over here, it looks a lot like a heartfelt showing of will and loyalty, which was rewarded (Abraham did get the call from the ‘Governor’ just in the nick of time). Sure the story is viscerally grotesque in the vulgarity of its subject matter, but what parable isn’t? (That’s right, I said parable… whatcha gonna do about it?) Then there’s Noah, who built an arc to save those righteous enough to deserve a stay of execution, finishing at the last moment as the rains began just barely beating the flood that wiped out all other life (Makes me wonder what the poor unicorns were doing with those horns that they got left behind (that’s right, I said left behind) and weren’t allowed on the boat). I could go on, but I’m getting myself a little perturbed (shit or get off the pot already) so I’ll get to the point.
So people want to talk about doing ‘God’s work’? People believe that a divine being capable of inspiring such faith, and able to wipe out all but a select few by His own will needs their help to ‘do His work’?? I don’t know, it just seems to me that some people just don’t get religion at all.
But (insert very large grain of salt here) this is all coming from someone who wears a button that says “Jesus is my babydaddy” and has been known to say things like “Blasphemy: the most fun you’ll ever have in church.” So what do I know, right?
